Case study
A front door for the Lab's partnerships#
The Innovation and Partnerships Office (IPO) is Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's gateway to industry. It licenses Lab technologies and builds the partnerships that move research into the private sector. The new site had to speak to two very different audiences — executives and entrepreneurs looking for a competitive edge, and researchers looking for collaborators — and give each of them a clear way in.
Concept and art direction#
I led the concept and art direction for the site. My team built all of its interactivity, and we collaborated with another team to art-direct a family of 3D motion graphics that set its visual tone. Each step of the site's "How to Get Started" sequence is paired with its own looping 3D animation, turning a procedural partnering process into something inviting.
Collaboration across the Lab#
The project crossed organizational lines, and delivery was split with a partner team. I managed my team's side across multiple departments and technical organizations, keeping concept, content, design, and development moving together toward a single launch.
My team did the technical heavy lifting, while the partner team built the static pages and handled the content migration. To keep the two halves aligned, I tracked the content inventory and wrote the original migration requirements for the site's Drupal content types.
What we delivered#
The finished site is built on Drupal 10 and gives partners several ways into the Lab's technology:
- Audience-based entry points for business leaders and for researchers, each with its own call to action.
- A four-step getting-started path, anchored by the 3D motion graphics.
- Ten technology portfolios, from advanced computing, AI, and quantum to space.
- Success stories, annual reports, and award histories that show what past partnerships have produced.
